Gladys I. Starks, 93, of Janesville passed away on Thursday, June 23, 2011 at Mercy Hospital & Trauma Center. Gladys was born on September 18, 1917 in the Village of Peterburg, Crawford County, WI, the daughter of Harry and Maggie (Zintz) Bacon. She married Earnest O. Starks on February 14, 1938. They farmed in the Evansville area for many years. Gladys also was employed in the kitchen at the Rock County Home for a number of years. She was a former member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Evansville. She had also been active in the Martha Society, the Goodwill Community Club, the We Are Neighbors group, the Parents and Teachers Association, volunteered at her church, was a member of the Waucoma Grange and The Farm Bureau. Gladys enjoyed gardening, sewing, reading the newspaper and spending time with friends and family. Since residing in Janesville, Gladys has been a member of Trinity Free Lutheran Church.

Surviving are two children, David Starks of Sun Prairie, WI, Debra Cummings of Black River Falls, WI, seven grandchildren, Nathan (Anne Marie) Cummings, Aaron Cummings, Shannon (Christopher) Reetz, Heidi Ochoa, Davey Starks, Holly Cooper, Hayle Starks, eight great-grandchildren, Ethan, William and Owen Lock, Austin and Nicholas Cooper, Katherine and Jacqueline Cummings, Aiden Reetz, one brother, Beauford “Boots” (Virginia) Bacon of Janesville, one sister, Eva Reed of Milton, numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Earnest Starks on March 1, 2006. She is also preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Geneiva Quade and one brother, Earl Bacon.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, June 27, 2011 at Trinity Free Lutheran Church, 2727 Holiday Drive, Janesville with Rev. Frank Cherney officiating. Burial will be in Milton Lawns Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, June 26th at Henke-Clarson Funeral Home, 1010 N. Wright Rd., Janesville and at the church from 10:30 a.m. until 11 a.m. Monday. Memorials may be made in Gladys’ name to Save Janesville Schools Fund.
